A Living Room Space

A living room is simple to describe. It's comfortable, boasts multifunctional furnishings, and is usually the most used area in your house. However, it takes more than a big TV to create an atmosphere that everyone can appreciate.

The family room add-on in Joshua and Grezelda Smith's home in New York is an excellent example. Working together with famous architect Chuck Peabody (who formed the main team of folding doors) and interior designer Janey Jimplin, the Smiths integrated specific components so the new space lives up to their demands. So now they have a multifunctional space which has a traditional elegance. Join us, and discover how Chuck and Janey mixed four crucial elements to create the Smiths' most beloved space.

Phase 1: Area Association
Chuck's design for the new addition connects the main family room from one side and the veranda from the other. "We needed to reach the deck quickly," says Peabody. The move from new to old is effortless and easy. "Friends who come by have no idea this room was a redesigned addition."

Phase 2: Relaxation and Durability With Style
Janey and her coworker Elizabeth Surfroot designed a multi-function seating space. The footstool works as a coffee table but has the convenience of a chair. There is plenty of space for the teenagers to relax on the floor when gaming or watching television. A simple wool carpet conceals dirt and resists wear and tear. Padded chairs offer the same job -- beautiful durability. If the black and white chenille gets ruined, it can possibly be reconditioned. The timelessness of the decoration justifies the outlay on well-built, premium quality pieces.

Phase 3: Functional Storage Areas
Janey and Chuck made sure the Smiths had specified places for their electronic devices. Functional builtin cabinets also add architectural allure. The tv and Blu-ray player are on either side, and the second cabinet holds games.

Phase 4: Sunlight and Color Options
Sunlight plays a big role in this space as a result of many windows. Orange walls and matching materials fill the space with warmth. Simple halogen lighting in the ceiling, along with floor lights in a couple of corners, add more subdued task lighting.
